Dental Implants at Huntington Beach Dentist’s Office

Dental implants replace missing teeth. Traditional bridges require cutting down of adjacent teeth.  When there is no adjacent tooth on either side of the missing area, wearing a removable denture used to be the only option.  Dental implants have a lot of advantages over those traditional dental treatments.  Learn more about the benefits of dental implants at our Los Angeles Office web site.

x-ray afterDental implants are shaped like screws and serve as roots for crowns. Dental implants are screwed into the bone after making appropriate sized holes in the bone.  Dental implants are  usually 3.5 to 6 mm in diameter  (2.5 mm is about 1/10 of one inch) and 8 to 13 mm in length.

Three to six months after placing a dental implant, a custom made crown (cap) is put on top of the dental implant.  Putting a crown on to an implant is similar to putting a crown on a natural tooth. Once the dental implants have integrated into the bone, they can last indefinitely with good regular care by the dentist.

Most people require only local anesthetics (numbing) for the surgical placement of dental implants.  The patient is usually prescribed medications to help prevent infection and relieve pain.

Dental implants are used to replace one or more missing teeth.  Dental implants are also used as anchors to stabilize loose dentures.

The Success Rate of Dental Implants

Most research papers report success rates of 90% to 98%.  Some failures do occur, most failures occur during the first year.  Causes of failure are inadequate bone quantity, inadequate bone quality, inappropriate surgical and prosthetic protocols, infection around the implant and poor oral hygiene.  Available researches show that dental implant last over 10 to 20 years.  That is how long the researchers have followed up their cases.  Many believe the implants will last indefinitely if they are properly cared for.

Cavities do not develop under implant crowns, but  gum disease and bone loss may develop around implants.  To maintain healthy gums and bone level around dental implants, good oral hygiene practices at home, regular check ups and professional cleanings are essential.

Please watch the short presentation below.  This case was done in our Huntington Beach dental implant office by Dr. Lee. It shows how only one tooth of a long bridge was replaced with a dental implant.    The bridge was cut, and only the severely decayed tooth was extracted and replaced with a dental implant.  The rest of the bridge was serviceable and was left intact.  Without a dental implant, the patient would have to choose between a removable denture or redoing the long bridge. By keeping the existing long bridge, the patient was able to save thousands of dollars.

Your Huntington Beach Dentist, Dr. Lee, has extensive experiences with dental implants and uses the strictest surgical and prosthetic protocols with dental implant treatments.  You can be assured that you will get the best possible results with your dental implant treatment.
